Two CS faculty members and their interdisciplinary research teams have been named recipients of 2024 Digital Education and Learning Technology Acceleration Awards. Chosen from a pool of 28 submissions, proposals by Anton Dahbura and Tom Lippincott have been selected by the Johns Hopkins Provost’s Office to receive grants of up to $75,000 to support innovation in learning through digital technology.

This year’s winning proposals will receive a total of $364,000. In the seven years since its creation, the DELTA Awards program has distributed more than $2.6 million in funding, enhancing education both within and outside the university.

The executive director of the Johns Hopkins University Information Security Institute and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Institute of Assured Autonomy, Dahbura focuses his research efforts on security, fault-tolerant computing, distributed systems, and testing. Joined by Javad Abed, an assistant professor of practice at the Carey Business School, and Shih-Chun “David” Lin, an assistant professor of neurological surgery at the School of Medicine, he will work on “HealthGuard: Enhancing Cybersecurity in Health Care through AI and VR-Driven Gamified Training.” This project aims to introduce a cybersecurity training program for health care professionals that uses artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and gamification to create an immersive educational experience.

Lippincott’s research focuses on how machine learning can support and facilitate traditional scholarship in the humanities, particularly the use of unsupervised models structured for interpretability and isomorphism with respect to a domain of interest. His project, “Collaborative Data Science Learning Environment for Learners Outside of Core-Computation Disciplines,” will develop and evaluate a computational learning environment that makes computational and data science skills accessible for students in the humanities and social sciences.
