John C. Malone Associate Professor Mathias Unberath is one of sixteen faculty members from across the university who have been selected for the inaugural cohort of Provost’s Fellows for Public Engagement. The fellows will take part in a yearlong program designed to build their public engagement skills across a range of media platforms and audiences. Fellows were selected based on scholarly excellence, demonstrated commitment to public engagement, and innovative ideas for improving public understanding of their field.
The newly created Provost’s fellowship reflects the university’s commitment to its Ten for One goal of strengthening public trust in academic research and becoming a preeminent source of academic expertise to serve society. Through tailored training and engagement opportunities, fellows will become skilled in providing expert media commentary, proficient at adapting their message to various audiences and stakeholders, able to identify emerging topics of broad interest, and equipped to craft compelling narratives.
A strong proponent of educational and stakeholder outreach, Unberath builds the future of computer-assisted medicine by creating collaborative intelligent systems. Through synergistic research on imaging, computer vision, machine learning, and interaction design, he invents human-centered solutions that are embodied in emerging technology such as mixed reality and robotics.
“Outreach in the form of community engagement or dissemination of research findings in general public-facing venues is an important and immensely rewarding part of the research process,” Unberath says. “I am excited to acquire new skills that are catalytic for public engagement and to grow my abilities in leading strategic communications to continue engaging with diverse audience beyond the scientific communities.”
