Joanne Selinski, associate teaching professor of computer science and the director of undergraduate studies for the Department of Computer Science (CS), has been named associate chair for education in CS. In this new role, she will manage many aspects of fielding the department’s educational programs, from hiring and mentoring new instructors and hiring and training course and teaching assistants to coordinating semesterly course offerings. Selinksi will continue teaching core courses and serving as the director of undergraduate studies for the department.
“I am so pleased that JHU is recognizing Joanne’s leadership in education. She has been the face of the department for years through advising, mentoring, and teaching countless CS undergraduates,” said Randal Burns, professor and head of the Department of Computer Science. “She also makes our programs run, orchestrating the development and delivery of curricula and coordinating the hundreds of course assistants and teaching assistants that work in our program each year. I join my colleagues in a chorus of congratulations for an appointment well-earned and I look forward to Joanne’s continued contributions to our community.”
Selinksi has been with CS for more than 35 years, starting as a teaching assistant and becoming part of the faculty in 1996. Her interests lie in computer science education, particularly as it relates to core courses and active learning approaches. She was a 2017 recipient of the Robert B. Pond Sr. Excellence in Teaching Award, which is given for excellence in instruction, success in instilling a desire to learn, and dedication to undergraduate students.
Selinski earned her bachelor’s (’84) in mathematics from Chestnut Hill College, her master’s (’86) in electrical engineering and computer science from Johns Hopkins University and her Ph.D. (’96) in computer science from Johns Hopkins.
