The Department of Computer Science is pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Dredze as its Associate Head of Research and Strategic Initiatives. In this role, Dredze will lead the strategic growth and development plan for the department as it launches one of the most ambitious initiatives in academic computer science research centered around AI.
With its new Data Science and AI Institute, Johns Hopkins has made a historic commitment to build the nation’s foremost destination for emerging applications, opportunities, and challenges presented by data science, machine learning, and AI. Through this initiative, the Johns Hopkins Department of Computer Science will more than double in size in terms of faculty, research production, resources, revenue, and graduate students to become one of the largest computer science departments in the United States.
Dredze is the John C. Malone Professor of Computer Science, serves as the director of research in foundations of AI for the Data Science and AI Institute, and holds a joint appointment in the Biomedical Informatics & Data Science Section within the School of Medicine. He also has affiliations with the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare, the Center for Language and Speech Processing, and other institutions across and outside of the university. In his research, Dredze develops artificial intelligence systems based on natural language processing and explores their applications to public health and medicine.
