Randal Burns, department head and professor of computer science, has been appointed as the Bill and Lisa Stromberg Head in the Department of Computer Science.

This endowed headship was established in 2019 through the generosity of William (Bill) and Lisa Stromberg. Bill graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematical sciences in 1982. Bill is the former president and CEO and current non-executive chairman of the board at T. Rowe Price. He has been a longtime supporter of the university, the athletics program, and the Whiting School and currently serves as the chair of the Whiting School Advisory Board and a member of the Johns Hopkins University Board of Trustees.

Randal’s research interests lie in building high-performance, scalable data systems that allow scientists to make discoveries through the exploration, mining, and statistical analysis of big data. He is a member of and on the steering committee of the Kavli Neuroscience Discovery Institute, a member of the Institute for Data Intensive Science and Engineering, and on the steering committee of the Science of Learning Institute.
