Yana Safonova, assistant professor of computer science, has been selected to participate in the New York Academy of Sciences 2022 Interstellar Initiative as an early-career investigator.  Safonova’s research areas include studying adaptive immune systems, understanding successes and failures of immune responses, and predicting efficacy of immunizations.

Safonova will attend a three-day virtual event in September in which groups of attendees will work to create a research project proposal that is eligible for funding in early 2023.  Applications for this workshop are by invitation only for researchers specializing in biomedical sciences, life sciences, physical/natural sciences, and biotechnology/analytical technology.

Along with this honor, Safonova was awarded a Data Science Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2017 by UCSD and Intersect Fellowship for Computational Scientists and Immunologists in 2019 by the American Associations of Immunologists.
