John C. Malone Associate Professor Suchi Saria has been named one of this year’s WebMD Health Heroes in recognition of her efforts to reshape the future of medicine through the use of artificial intelligence.
Per WebMD’s press release, its Health Hero Awards honor individuals and organizations making a lasting impact on health and wellness. Recipients are chosen by WebMD’s editorial team, which includes board-certified health care professionals and award-winning journalists. This year’s theme, “AI in Medicine,” highlights how AI is being used to address critical health challenges, offering innovative solutions for diagnosing, treating, and preventing serious conditions.
Saria was recognized for building an AI tool that has reduced the risk of sepsis-related deaths in hospitals by 20 percent. Developing this technology—which can detect sepsis nearly 6 hours earlier than traditional methods—was personal for Saria, as she lost her nephew to the life-threatening condition in 2017. Her work is already saving lives in hospitals across the country and was named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023.
