Video Games for "Non-Gamers"
I never identified as a “gamer” and always thought the only options were shooter games like Halo or Call of Duty (COD). I am happy to say that I was sorely mistaken! So here are my recommendations for those who want to get into games and don’t want to be held back by hand-eye-coordination!
Since I have poor hand-eye coordination for action-based games, I typically prefer puzzle, strategy, or story games. Most of the list below are only on Nintendo Switch. I’ve ordered the list not by preference but by (perceived*) less- to more-mainstream, since recommending a super popular game isn’t very useful.
Explanation of game descriptors:
- Story: The game has a fun or touching storyline
- Puzzle: Game play is exclusively focused on puzzles such as “escape the room”
- Strategy: Note that while puzzle games require strategy, they are in a separate category since puzzle games only have puzzles and minimal plot or other aspects
- Exploration: Games that have a main storyline but also exist in an “open world” setting where you can go anywhere you want and complete side-quests
- Art: Beautiful or unique art or animation style
- Casual: Game is designed for “casual” gaming where you primarily build things, decorate, or explore without a clear goal
*Perceived popularity is based on whether other people immediately recognize which game I am talking about
Child of Light
Story, Art
One of the most beautiful games I’ve ever seen. The animation is styled like a fairy-tale book with stunning watercolor. [Link]
Trine
Puzzle
“Escape” puzzles where you use abilities of the different characters to get to the next stage. Can also be played as a multi-player. [Link]
Planet Alpha
Puzzle, Art
An escape game similar to Trine except the setting is a planet that you’re marooned on. [Link]
Subnautica / Subnautica: Below Zero
Strategy, Exploration, Art
A survivor game where you crashed onto a planet and you have to explore and mine for materials to re-build your ship. There’s also an extensive story component if you listen to all the found tapes and read all the ship logs. [Link]
Portal
Puzzle
Another escape game, but you’re a human and are solving puzzles for a robot. [Link]
Any Legend of Zelda Game
Exploration, Art
This one is also very mainstream. I like it because it emphasizes strategy over hand-eye coordination. You can beat enemies by preparing foods, potions, and weapons. My favorite part of the open-world games on Switch (Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom) is the side quests! I typically try to do all the game extras before completing the main storyline (if I even finish it).
Animal Crossing
Casual
This isn’t really a game, it’s more a lifestyle honestly.
